Facial recognition for branch security is a specific, narrower application of the technology than the general term suggests — it's about matching faces against a defined watchlist at a specific point (a door, an ATM vestibule), not continuously identifying every customer who walks past a camera. Understanding that distinction is the first step to understanding what the technology actually does in a banking environment.

How watchlist matching actually works

A facial recognition system compares a face captured on camera against a database of known faces — people already flagged for a specific reason, such as a prior fraud incident or a banned-person notice — rather than checking every visitor against every record in existence. If there's no match, nothing happens and nothing is stored beyond the system's normal operating window; if there is a match, staff get an alert.

Who typically ends up on a watchlist

A watchlist is built from specific, documented incidents — someone previously involved in a fraud case at that institution, or a banned-person notice from a prior event — not a general database of the public. This is a meaningful distinction: the system has nothing at all to say about the overwhelming majority of people it sees, since they were never added to a watchlist in the first place.

Speed and accuracy, and how they're actually measured

ITOI's system is independently NIST-tested at 99.87% accuracy on the LFW (Labeled Faces in the Wild) benchmark, with a False Non-Match Rate under 0.0335 — meaning it rarely misses a genuine match. Matching itself happens in under 100 milliseconds via edge intelligence, fast enough that a flagged individual is identified while they're still in view, not minutes later after they've already left the branch.

What a typical alert actually looks like

When a match occurs, the alert reaches staff essentially instantly — under 100 milliseconds after the face is captured — giving a real window to respond while the person is still on-site, rather than confirming the match later from recorded footage after they've gone. What staff do with that alert is a matter of the branch's own security procedure; the system's job stops at flagging the match accurately and fast.

Where it's typically deployed at a branch

The most common deployment points are the branch entrance and the ATM vestibule — both places where a fast, automated check adds real value without requiring a staff member to be physically present and watching at all times. This pairs naturally with after-hours coverage, when a vestibule may be unattended but still needs the same level of security awareness as during business hours.

Privacy and compliance

All facial signatures and images are AES-256 encrypted in transit and at rest, and when the system runs on-premises, no data passes over the internet at all. The platform is built around the Australian Privacy Act 1988, with administrative controls including straightforward opt-in/opt-out management — a genuine requirement for any bank branch handling biometric data, not an optional extra.

What it deliberately doesn't do

This is not the same as general customer surveillance or tracking every visitor's identity — the system is built around watchlist matching specifically, which means it has nothing to report on someone who isn't on a watchlist in the first place. That distinction matters both for how the technology is actually used and for how it should be explained to customers and regulators.
